I got my KS pledge for Vindication in the mail a couple weeks ago. After two plays (with a couple more scheduled) it’s already one of my favorite games in a long time.

But wow, does it have some weird component and insert decisions.

First and foremost, I always sleeve cards for any new games I get. After I sleeved Vindication and tried to put the cards back in the insert, I found they didn’t fit properly.

Now, I’m not sure whether this is a function of the type of sleeves I used or the fact that I’d incorporated both promo and expansion cards in the lot, but they just didn’t fit. When I commented about it on Instagram, a representative of Orange Nebula linked me to this video where they show sleeved cards fitting, but even there it’s a pretty tight fit, so I have a feeling the insert’s just not designed to include expansion content.

Even so, after cramming the sleeved cards into the insert, I found the same problem I always find with vacuformed plastic inserts and sleeves: The inserts have rounded corners in the bottoms, so they bend sleeve corners:

This might seem like a minor quibble, but for anyone who regularly sleeves cards, you know that one of the big reasons for sleeving is to make an overhand mash shuffle possible, and when the corners are bent like this it makes mash shuffling a massive pain in the ass.

So, instead of dealing with all this, I just made a custom card box for the game!

You’ll notice the low-key retheme (rename) of the game on the box. The name Vindication is just thematically inappropriate (which I won’t go into here, but Rahdo explained it pretty well) and I figured if I was making components and storage, I’d just start making the alternate-universe version of the game. 🙂

In any case, all the cards – including promos and expansions, alongside dividers – fit well in the box with room to spare if Orange Nebula makes even more cards for the game:

How does it fit in the box, you ask? Well let me show you!

I modified the GameTrayz insert for the game by simply cutting out the included card tray:

Now, with the original card tray out of the way, the card box fits perfectly!

Anyways, I thought you guys might like to see my solution for sleeved cards for the game. In all honesty, I plan to do a lot of work on a new storage solution for Vindication, eventually probably working out a smaller box (which will involve directly modifying the board) and incorporating my “retheme” into the whole setup.

I’m really happy with how this one turned out.
